Tassie Echidna
Crade Mountain National Park : : Tasmania, Australia

If you want to see heaps and heaps of Echidnas, Tasmania is the place to go. While in Cradle National Park I was lucky enough to have one of these cute buggers walk over the trail less than 1/2 a metre away from me. Thing was, I had my 10-20mm wide angle lens on and just couldn’t get close enough to fill the frame!

This one I saw from the boardwark at a more reasonable distance and this time I was ready with my telephoto lens. I love these guys. They are so friggin’ cute!

Very cute! Reminds me of the European Hedgehog (jezek) .. Are they in the same family? Good shot of this fellow.

Well they’re both mammals, but definitely not in the same family. Echidnas are one of the very few egg laying mammals left in the world. There’s a few species of echidnas and the platypus that do that.
